MIDDLE SCHOOL SILENT READING

●CLARIFICATION●

Students at the middle school campus are participating in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time every Monday and Tuesday before or after lunch. Teachers/staff do understand that it is normally recess for the kids, and we also know that having DEAR fits best into the school day right there. Kids still have recess Wednesday-Friday every week. Our Monday-Tuesday DEAR is a 20-25 minute period in which each child is given the opportunity to fit in some much-needed time to just READ! Our daily schedules (at school and home) are so packed that it is very difficult to squeeze in a few moments to simply get lost in a book, while improving fluency, understanding, and comprehension at the same time--it is a win-win!

While DEAR is indeed a chance for students to work on meeting their AR goals, this is NOT the sole purpose for doing it. Students are not being punished for either having OR not having their AR points.
Reading should never be considered a punishment, and

DEAR truly is for every student’s benefit!
