Fourth grade will be tested on all the math, all of the reading (except Iread as that is done in third grade) and science. Social studies is tested in fifth grade.

Math: We will go back into Chapter 2 to study the Order of Operations. We will  solve equations and write and evaluate equations using grouping symbols. I will teach the students the  acronym of PEMDAS- Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally- parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction  to help them. This is a brand new skill and some students take awhile to master it. 


Religion: We stuffed stockings for the homeless Center last week, and had a 

Penance Service, so we are still studying Advent.  We worked on making our 

Advent Wreaths, and will learn about Advent customs of St. Lucy in Sweden, Los Posadas in Mexico , and St. Nicholas Day in Germany. We will focus on finding positive  attitudes and acts of kindness to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus at Christmas in our hearts. I will also give a talk on the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe.


Science: We only completed one lab due to extracurricular activities, so students will continue to find the  density of a ball of clay and a toy car. Students will find the volume of boxes and build a cube with a prescribed volume. We next will study  the basic parts of an atom: neutron,proton ,and electron. We will learn how atoms combine to form compounds.


Reading/Writing/Grammar:  We will be reading Can’t You Make Them Behave, King George?.  The skill for the week is Fact and Opinion and Figurative Language. Reading Test Friday. We will work on pronouns and verb tenses in grammar


Vocab and Spelling Words: Know definitions of words: vocabulary words with students:objected, midst, temporary, repeal, advantages. Spelling list #12.  Students were given a list and they are listed in the reader’s notebook on page 172.  The spelling words are also on spelling city. Spelling contract is due Friday. Vocab and spelling test Friday. 

Social Studies: We will continue working on Chapter 3 Settlements.  We will not test over this chapter until after break.

Math: We will problem solve with decimals on Friday, review for the test on Tuesday, then take the Chapter 7 test on Wednesday. On the test, students will  find the quotient with division patterns and decimals, estimate decimal quotients, use models to divide decimals by whole numbers and decimals by decimals, insert decimals  in the dividend, and divide digits by one digit and two digit numbers, Next, we will go back to Chapter 2 studying Order of Operations. This is a challenging chapter ,and I Iwill use the text and supplement it to help with  the acquisition of the concepts.


Religion: Advent is a period of preparation . Advent refers to the coming of Christ. And the term the coming includes three references: first of all, to our celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas; second, to the coming of Christ in our lives through grace and the Sacrament of Holy Communion; and finally, to his second coming at the end of time.

The students’ preparations, therefore, should have all three comings in mind. We need to prepare our souls to receive Christ.Between this week and next week,  Students will read about Advent from three different sources learning about Advent Customs. They will learn the history behind St. Nicholas Day, Saint Lucy Day in Sweden and in Italy, and Los Posadas, Students will learn about the  symbolization of the Advent Wreath. We will have a Penance Service this Wednesday. We will make an Advent wreath this week.

Science: We will complete two labs this week on measurement and density. Students learned last week how to find the volume of some pennies using water displacement, and will go further to find the density of objects using the formula Density = mass divided by volume. We will have a quiz onT thursday over section One of Chapter 11.The vocabulary and concepts on the quiz include:

elements, physical change, chemical change, weight, mass, matter, density ,volume and  buoyancy.

Students should also know  how to find volume using water displacement and know how to apply the formula for volume(lxwxh)

Reading/Writing/Grammar:  We will be reading Dangerous Crossing.  The skill for the week is Cause and Effect. Reading Test Friday

Math: There is  a test on Monday over Chapter 6. In Chapter 7 , we will estimate decimal quotients and use models to find quotients of decimals. We will also see patterns of decimal quotients. 


Religion: Students will  recognize the centrality of evangelization  as the mission of the Church and how evangelization is embodied in  service. 

Students will write about  the Kingdom of God as depicted in parables, and the miracles Jesus performed. The Kingdom of God is defined as God's rule of peace, justice,  and love that exists in heaven , but has not yet come to fullness on Earth.We will also discuss our favorite parables and their meanings. Vocabulary for Chapter 8 includes; Kingdom of God,  parable, miracle , and conversion.


Science: For the test, students will be tested  on these vocabulary words: decomposer carnivore, omnivore, herbivore. predator, prey, food web, producer, consumer

how  bacteria can be helpful or  harmful.They should be able to name  4 decomposers.

Students should know  how decomposers build soil and put nutrients in the ground.

Students should  know examples of how animals use senses to communicate to establish rank, find food, find mates, or alert others of danger. They have  a handout on that concept. We also had a class day on invasive species, so students should use their handouts to talk about the problems invasive species cause to a food chain.


Reading/Writing/Grammar:  We will be reading Cougars and take a reading test on Friday over the skill; Main Idea.
