Mary Helen Gallucci

This is my first year teaching Literature at Mishawaka Catholic, and I'm delighted to be here! For the last seven years (five at Notre Dame), I have been in graduate school studying medieval literature, and teaching several college courses — particularly about Saints’ Lives. Prior to graduate school, I received my undergraduate degree in Music Education from Northwestern University (I play violin), and then taught grades 1-8 English in the Marshall Islands. I also have two kids, Beatrice (3) and Benedict (1), who are my world!

Welcome to middle school literature class!
I’m looking forward to sharing some great
books and discussions with your children!
Each grade will be reading between 4 and 6
class novels this year, as well as short stories,
poems, and individually-chosen books. We
will be diving into plot, characterization, and
symbolism while working on important study
skills like summary and annotation.

Students must come to class each day
with their copies of our book(s),
prepared to contribute to discussion of
the assigned reading and listen
respectfully to their peers’ thoughts. A
majority of their homework will be
reading outside of class; this should be
done with attention to detail and vocabulary.

Open-ended written assignments and
presentations are graded based on
consistent rubrics; late work loses 10%
per school day. Students’ grades will be
comprised of their assignments,
quizzes/tests, and participation.
